capturing what exists

Challenges
& Objectives

/ Project Overview

TheFieldRecordist is an ongoing sound recording practice centred on capturing real environments as they exist. The work focuses on listening first, then recording with care and restraint. Each piece aims to preserve space, texture, and context without staging or performance.

The objective is to build a dependable archive of real-world sound. The recordings are intended to be useful for listening, study, and creative production. Accuracy and clarity take priority over effect or spectacle.

/ Scope

The project spans field recordings, ambiences, urban and domestic spaces, and contact-based sound. Material ranges from short sound effects to extended atmospheres. Locations are chosen for their acoustic character rather than visual interest.

/ Process

Sound is captured using stereo recording, contact microphones, and geophonic techniques. Processing is kept light to retain the original signal. Each recording is documented with clear metadata and source notes.

/ Challenges

Maintaining authenticity is the core challenge. Real environments contain unpredictable noise, movement, and interference, which makes each recording a judgement call. Deciding what belongs in the sound and when to abandon a take relies on experience rather than fixed rules.

Technical limits, time, and access add further pressure. Wind, vibration, and surface resonance can distort recordings, especially with contact and geophonic methods. Many sounds are brief or unrepeatable, and there is constant pressure to clean or enhance them. Choosing restraint and knowing when to stop remains a deliberate part of the process.

/ Output

TheFieldRecordist is ongoing. The archive continues to grow through new locations, surfaces, and recording methods.

The work is released as sound libraries, albums, and supporting video documentation. Releases are published through platforms such as Bandcamp and YouTube. Some material is offered freely, while other releases are paid, depending on use and format.
